Puran Poli / Obbattu

Obbattu / Puran Poli is one of my fav childhood snack. I love both dal n coconut puran polis. I remember those childhood days, where one of my neighbor aunty who often makes this obattu for all pooja n festivals. she never missed to share with me. She used to make small thick polis with both coconut and dal stuffing. Those are very delicious polis. I have tried this poli 3 times before with all combos but this this is the first time it came out well and i was fully satisfied with the taste and texture....with the same puran you can also make deep fried version with maida as dipping, called Suzhiyam/Kalla Paniyaram.Check out the link for that recipe. Now to the delicious puran polis...
Ingredients
For outer dough
  1. Maida/all purpose flour     1 cup
  2. Turmeric     a pinch
  3. Salt     to taste
  4. Oil    2 tbsp
  5. Water    as needed
Method
  • Take a wide bowl, add flour, turmeric powder, salt and oil and mix well n crumble it and using water knead it to a soft, smooth and pliable dough.
  • Let the dough rest for 30 minutes ...cover it using a damp clothe or plastic wrap and keep aside.
Ingredients
For filling
  1. Chana dal    1/2cup
  2. Tuvar dal   1/2 cup
  3. Jaggery (powdered)   1 cup
  4. Cradamom    4 no.s(crushed)
  5. or cardamom powder   1/4 tsp
  6. Coconut    2 tbsp(shredded)
Method
  • Wash and soak chana and tuvar dal for at least half an hour.
  • After that cook dal with enough water until soft but not mushy.
  • Drain the excess water(using colander) and grind the drained n cooked dal along with powdered jaggery to smooth mixture.
  • Now heat pan/vessel roast shredded coconut(fresh) till moisture dries up and add the ground chana n jaggery.
  • Keep stirring and add cardamom powder and keep stirring in high flame for 4-5 minutes till the mixture gets thicken and moisture leaves.
  • Thats it dal puran is ready now and allow the pooranam to cool completely.

Method
For Puran Poli
  • Now divide the kneaded maida dough in to 10 equal lemon sized balls.
  • Likewise divide the poornam also in to 10 small ball shaped and keep aside.
  • Using rolling pan or firm base, take one maida balls and gently press or roll to a 3" disc and keep one filling in the center and bring all the edges together and seal it by pressing all the ends together.
  • now again roll the stuffed ball to 6" thick  or 8" thin poli .
  • Do the same for all dough and filling .
  • Now heat a tawa/griddle, smear ghee and toast one poli on medium high flame.
  • After 1-2 minutes flip the poli and cook till done...brown spots appear on both sides of the poli.
  • Remove from tawa/griddle, smear some more ghee on the hot poli.
  • Yummy Puran polis are ready to enjoy !!!  Enjoy Hot or Warm.

Note:
Instead of tuvar dal you can also make this puran poli with chana dal alone.
Adding coconut is optional.
You can also add some sesame seeds along with coconut ,then roast n proceed.
